8:30 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
First bell: 8:25 a.m.
Tardy bell: 8:30 a.m.
*Supervision: 7:45 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.

*Supervision begins at 7:45 a.m., therefore students may NOT arrive before that time. Supervision ends at 3:20 p.m. Students may NOT be dropped off before 7:45 a.m., or picked up after 3:20 p.m. After 3:20 p.m. students will be sent to the Extended Day Program, where a drop-in fee will need to be paid.

Car Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedure

Children are only to be dropped off and picked up in the 12 yellow marked spaces directly in front of the school. This is the only designated area for drop off or pick up, and the only area where a school crossing guard is on duty for the protection of children and to direct traffic. The middle lane serves as a drive through lane only. Please do not drop off your child anywhere in front of the playground area or across the street and do not use the Bus Loading area in the back of the school. Note: The speed limit in the school driveway is 5 MPH.

Car Tags

Each Gilchrist family will be receiving 2 tags for car pick-up. If you are coming to pick up your child and you DO NOT have car tag hanging in your car, you will be asked to move out of the pick-up line and an employee will check your driver's license with the front office. Please help us by using the car tags each day. This will decrease your wait time during car pick-up. Additional tags are available in the office for $5 each. Thank you for your help as we ensure that every child goes home with the right person and is safe.

Disclosure of Student Information

Parents/Guardians: The policy for the disclosure of student information can be found in our Annual Notice of Rights Regarding Student Information. The form included in this document was also provided on blue paper in your childs welcome packet. Please return this form to your child's teacher if you wish to be excluded.

Dress Code

Our faculty and staff will encourage ALL students to dress in a fashion that reflects a style appropriate for a school day. Students will not be allowed to wear the following:
  1. Flip flops, slides, shoes with cleats, platform shoes, shoes with wheels.
  2. Halter tops, spaghetti straps on shirts and dresses, midriff shirts or clothing that leaves the body bare.
  3. Clothing or articles with offensive language, gestures or slogans.
  4. Clothing which exposes undergarments, baggy or ill fitting pants.

In addition, all shorts and skirts must extend beyond the students fingertips when arms are extended at the side. Hats/caps may be worn outside for sun or cold protection, but must be removed indoors. We ask parents to make sure their children are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions. It is always a good idea to mark your child's name on the inside of coats, sweaters, and shirts that are worn as a second layer, as well as lunch boxes.

Gilchrist ListServ/Mailing List

If you have email at your home or office, please join the Gilchrist Elementary ListServ/Mailing List. From time to time you will receive announcements, updates and other pertinent information from the school. There is no cost for this service, and it is easy to join! Just follow these directions:

  2. Click on GES-PARENTS (for General Information to Gilchrist Parents)
  3. Click on "Join or Leave the List"
  4. Enter your email address and name in the spaces provided
  5. Click on the "Join the List" button

In just a few minutes you will receive an email confirmation. When you get the confirmation message, please respond immediately. You must reply within 48 hours, or your membership will be canceled. LCS Security Procedures

We want to remind you that we are trying to improve our security at the Howell building located at 3955 West Pensacola Street. These security measures are standard Leon County School procedures. All individuals need official Leon County School ID to gain access to the Production Room including laminating services, poster making, Ellison die cuts, etc. at the District Media Center. We do not like to turn away teachers and/or volunteers. Please Note: Teachers should bring their LCS ID badge. Volunteers will be allowed access with a LCS ID badge or a LCS raptor Visitor Badge.

Medication Policy

If your child requires any medication during the school day or emergency medication (inhalers or Epi-Pens), please stop by the office to pick up permission forms and/or management plans that must be filled out by a doctor prior to leaving medication at school. If you have your already completed your plan, please drop it off with our school nurse or our office staff.

Registration Information

The following are required for enrollment: birth certificate, student's social security number, and two proofs of residency; either a copy of the contract for the future residence, and a utility bill, or a cable or phone bill. Immunization records and a copy of a physical are also required. The physical MUST be given within a year of the DAY the student is enrolled. For example, if a student is registering on August 15, 2013, the physical must be done between August 15, 2012 and August 15, 2013. If a student is enrolling on October 21, 2013, the physical must be done between October 21, 2012 and October 21, 2013.

Safety Reminder

The new school year means EVERYONE will need to bring your driver's license to the office and have it re-scanned the first time you are on campus. Anytime you are on campus, you will need to come into the office and sign in and receive a visitor's pass. You will need to have your license scanned each semester.

School Transportation Changes

We must have any changes in the way your child goes home in writing. This is for the safety and security of your child. We stop taking changes after 2:00 p.m. If you e-mail someone in the office or send a fax, be sure and call us to make sure it has been received. Do not send e-mail changes to your child's teacher – many times they do not get a chance to check e-mail during the day. Gilchrist's fax is 487-0959.

Student Supervision begins at 7:45 a.m.

Parents – we are concerned about an unsafe situation. Student supervision begins at 7:45 a.m. Students should never be dropped off before 7:45 a.m. Students may be signed up with our Extended Day Program and should walk their children into the cafeteria to sign in. This EDEP fee-based program is available from 6:45-7:45 a.m. If you would like to sign up with our Extended Day Program contact Director Kim Prater at 488-4060.
